Introduced in August of 2007, the M4000 is one of two direct replacements for the Sun Fire V490 server and the Sun Fire E2900 server, the other direct replacement being the Enterprise M5000. Part of a new generation of mid-range data center-class systems, the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 server offers non-disruptive in box transitions and the ability to mix and match processor generations, without downtime, expensive upgrade kits or forklifts. The Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 is ideally suited for tasks such as ERP, SCM, CRM deployments, collaboration and large shared memory applications and can easily be scaled out to meet increased future requirements. The M4000 is optimized for 24x7 mission critical computing and large shared memory applications; allows you to mix and match up to four 2.4 GHz SPARC64 VII processors and/or 2.15 GHz SPARC64 VI processors in the same system; has built-in, integrated, flexible virtualization technology; its SPARC64 VII quad-core processor provides an almost twofold performance improvement on HPC or floating point intensive workloads, and up to 80% more performance on commercial applications; and it is an ideal consolidation platform with up to 2 dynamic domains, and support for thousands of Solaris containers. Sun has a free-to-the-public field engineer's handbook called Sunsolve. The handbook pages for the Sun M4000 server can be viewed by clicking here.

Sun Fire V890 Server

Introduced in March of 2003 as the replacement for the Sun Fire 3800 server, Sun Fire V1280 server gives you a choice of 4-way, 8-way, or 12-way multiprocessing based on boards containing four UltraSPARC III Cu processors and memory, using one, two, or three perpendicularly mounted processor boards. Processor boards contain four processors of the same speed. However, the V1280 supports mixed-speed CPUs on multiple boards, so the addition of a faster processor board does not necessitate the upgrading of previously installed system boards. Large memory capacity allows high performance through data-in-memory applications. Up to 96 GB memory gives you plenty of flexibility. The server also gives you large and multiple concurrent data access from memory, such as 512 data bits per access, ECC-protected. The Sun Fire V1280 server gives you a host of advanced availability features, including: dynamic reconfiguration of CPU/memory boards, hot CPU upgrades, redundant Sun Fireplane interconnect, redundant network connections, hot-swap disks, smart fans, and 2N redundant hot-swap power supplies. The Sun Fire V1280 was shipped as a RoHS compliant server starting in July of 2006, and was EOL’d (end-of-lifed) in October of 2007. It was replaced by the Sun Fire E2900. Sun has a free-to-the-public field engineer's handbook called Sunsolve. The handbook pages for the Sun Fire V1280 server can be viewed by clicking here.
